How can I determine if my house if north facing or south facing with regards to light exposure?

I hear it a lot when viewing home and garden shows, but how is it determined?

  1. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Where does the sun hit your house in the morning and late afternoon? Stand with the morning sun towards your right and the afternoon sun towards your left, you are currently facing north. Where is the front of your house in relation to how you are facing? If it is in front of you, the house faces north, behind you: south, on your right: east, on your left: west.
  2. Does the front of the house face north? Or does the front of the house face south? That is the determining factor. A compass can be used to determine that.

It is used to decide where to plant and/or where to put a garden room. It can also affect the consumption of utilitys - in the winter a south facing house will get more sun than the other would thus using less electricity.
  3. Note the direction the front of the house is facing relative to the sun when it rises. If the sun shines directly on the sides, it faces north/south; on the front, it faces east; on the back, it faces west.
