Do blinds really make a difference in insulation?

I am buying my first home and looking at different blinds. I am in an area that has hot summers and cold winters. My home builder isn't known for the best quality insulation. Should I get really good insulated blinds for the windows? Does it really make a difference?

Public Comments

  1. Yes. The majority of heat is lost through the windows of a house.
  2. Yes it does. I have saved so much by going to blinds and taking down my curtains. Lowes has some good deals and all kinds and the best of all is they will even install them for you.
  3. Anything that covers a bare window acts as insulation.
  4. Try reflective insulated film over windows. Its fitted here in spain by specialists.Reflects sunlight, but insulates in winter
  5. Many people overlook the fact that, many times, thier window(s) can count for 1/3 of thier wall.

Blinds aren't going to do much, A heavy set of curtains would be more effective...if you have ''leaky'' windows, try getting some silicone and going arond the inside and outside of the windows to seal them..that would be a very cost effective way of helping keep your temp inside normalized...Blinds aren't really going to do much of anything except keep out the sunshine...When winter comes, blinds aren't going to guard against the cold...try the silicone.
  6. Of course it will make a difference. And do not go with cheap blinds, they'll break soon.

Some builders offer to install blinds (for additional cost, of course.)

Don't buy from them. They overprice the blinds a lot.

I bought an investment property in a new construction. The cheapest blinds the builder offered were $2,000 for a one bedroom place!

A blind company installed better blinds for $1000 for me.
