Is it safe to put shredded used office paper into a compost bin?

I was wondering if the print could be toxic? The compost ends up on our vegie garden.
Thanks for your answer, RScott, but I live in Australia - maybe our ink is the same? Not sure - anyone know?

  1. I would have thought it would have been absolutely fine.
  2. Yes, it could be toxic.
  3. sure it is
  4. It should be fine. Most printing now uses non toxic inks.
  5. Most US ink is soy based. That stuff makes wonderful compost in no time. Some companies are paranoid about shredded stuff. Seems there are programs, free and or cheap that can put the documents back together if you scan all the strips. Could be of use in the office, offer to take the boss's or evil workmates shreds to the trash. RScott
  6. Depends. The worm farm we have can't take paper. But if you have a backyard pile of compost then yes you can add paper.
  7. Believe it or not, even if the ink is nontoxic, the paper still could be. You will be adding trace amounts of dioxin to the soil, for one thing. If you are using your compost to grow food, you should reseach this carefully.

    Good on you for composting!
  8. it should be perfectly fine. Not gloss paper though
