What kind of tools do I need to start my small home garden?

  1. All I used was a good hand shovel, and something to break the dirt apart like a hoe or sickle. Pruning shears definitely. Also stakes and ties depending what you're planting. I bought a garden tool kit for $10 that had all sorts of tools, you don't need to spend a lot.
  2. A shovel to turn over the soil and break up stubborn dirt clods is a must. The only other long handled tool that is essential for a small garden is a garden rake. A leaf rake won't do the job, make sure it is a stiff tined garden rake. A long handled hoe for weeding is optional but is not really needed for a small garden.

Hand tools include a gardening trowel, a three or four pronged hand rake for loosening up the soil around your plants, and set of hand pruners.

Buy good quality tools, take good care of them, and they will last you a lifetime.

    Good luck with your garden.
